Beat together sugar and butter till creamy. Beat in egg. Sift flour,
then step. Sift all dry ingredients unitedly. Pour some 1/3 of
the milk into the sugar mixture and mix good. Then put around 1/3 of
the dry mixture in and beat well anew. Continue alternating liquid
and dry. Add a cupful of dates or nuts if desired. bake in a moderate
oven till it tests through.
